Because “If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it”.
Performance recording provides a reliable and objective way of determining which sheep perform best, give the best returns and require the least inputs.
It allows us to scientifically select for the traits that we want to maximise the health and welfare of the flock and to produce lambs as efficiently as we can, minimising impact on the landscape and our carbon footprint.
Performance recording gives us greater confidence that the animals we sell to other breeders and particularly commercial producers are going to produce offspring that are similarly efficient.
Without estimated breeding values (EBVs) we could never make the informed breeding decisions that we do. It would be impossible to account for all the variables that influence sheep performance and we are happy to trust Signet to do it for us. EBVs allow us to benchmark our sheep against other flocks and pooling data within Signet helps everyone to improve. Genotyping our sheep is starting to take assessment of performance to the next level.
We are active members of the Centurion sheep breeders group of flocks which performance record their Dorsets.
